Texas Department of Transportation to hold transportation town hall meeting in Abilene

AUSTIN – Abilene area residents concerned about regional transportation needs should plan to attend Wednesday evening’s town hall at Abilene City Hall organized by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The event is intended to encourage more discussion and information sharing between area residents and the state’s road-building agency.

“Texans deserve a voice in the transportation planning process. Frankly, the perceived lack of opportunity to participate in process in the past frustrated many Texans and heightened the need for TxDOT to work more closely with the public,” said Bill Noble, executive director for Texans for Safe Reliable Transportation, a road-building advocacy group of Texas employers, civic leaders and Texas drivers. “These meetings should go a long way in enabling Texans to participate in the process. Texas has to make room for the average of roughly 1,200 new Texans moving here each day and ensure we have the infrastructure to support our growing economy. These town halls are a key building block in that process.”

The town hall meetings, a new initiative by new Department of Transportation Chair Deirdre Delisi and Executive Director Amadeo Saenz, hopefully will foster conversation and collaboration between communities and the department to get feedback on local transportation issues and needs. Area residents and business owners who utilize local roadways should try to attend the meeting to discuss the growing transportation needs of their communities.

TxDOT has scheduled two other town hall meetings – in McAllen on Nov. 5 and in Midland/Odessa area on Nov. 13. Attendees are encouraged to provide oral or written testimony and will be allowed time to make comments or ask questions of transportation officials and engineers in attendance.
