Texans Can Help Decide Transportation Needs through 2030

2030 Committee to hold first public meeting in Austin

AUSTIN – Central Texans concerned about area transportation needs should plan to attend Thursday night’s public hearing in Austin by the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2030 Committee. The 12-member committee is developing a report to be issued in December 2008 on the state’s transportation needs. Thursday’s public hearing is the first of five to give Texans a voice in discussing future transportation planning and needs in Texas.

The 2030 Committee, just one of the latest initiatives by new Department of Transportation Chair Deirdre Delisi, will foster conversation and collaboration between communities and the department to develop and update the state’s transportation plan for the next 20 years.

“Lack of the opportunity to participate in the transportation planning process has frustrated many Texans and highlighted the need for TxDOT to work more closely with the public,” said Bill Noble, executive director for Texans for Safe Reliable Transportation. “Local residents should attend these meetings to discuss the growing transportation needs of their communities. Texas has to make room for the roughly 1,200 new Texans moving here each day and ensure we have the infrastructure to support our growing economy. The 2030 Committee is a key building block in that process.”

The Committee will hold a total of five public meetings similar to town halls to listen to local Texans about the transportation needs of their area. Committee chairman Dr. Michael Walton will begin with an overview of the purpose for the 2030 Committee and comment on the need for transportation planning in Texas. Citizen participants will then be allowed three minutes to make comments.

Specific times and locations for the other public hearings are not yet available.
